The Average Baby Boomer has $12,000 in Savings, MOTIVATION FOR CHANGE
That is right, according to my investment advisor, after the economy went bad in 2008, today in February 2012, what is left over: $12,000. That’s it. A lot of people say, well, I will get Social Security income when I retire. Good luck on that. I hope 1) it is still around and 2) you can pay for gas at $4.25 per gallon (estimated by May of 2012) on the $600 to $800 per month you might get from Social Security. I call Social Security Income (SSI) today S.I.I. (Social Insecurity Income).
Maybe your situation is like mine. On July 31ST, 2009, I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, in which I had to go for treatment at the Mayo Clinic, one of the few treatment centers for my type of cancer. They initially gave me a 15% chance to be alive in two years. Well, the cancer is so rare; they had a round table meeting and decided to change the treatment protocol on me. Well, IT WORKED. I am cancer free after having multiple life threatening complications to deal with through the early summer of 2010.
So, I started to live again in May 2010, almost a year after the diagnosis, and of course I could not work from July 31ST, 2009 until May 1ST, 2010. Well, I was kind of doing well until November 12TH, 2010. My balance had been a little off after all the cancer related issues, and I decided to tumble down 13 steps head first. I had to drag myself across the living room floor to call an ambulance. After a CAT scan, I had a starburst fracture of my L-3 vertebrae, in which fragments penetrated my spinal canal. I had two surgeries, the second being February 10TH, 2011. A ten hour surgery, fifteen pints of blood later, and one trip to ICU on a ventilator for 24 hours, I had a new lower back, with all new shiny titanium parts. Of course, it took until February 2012 to fully recover.
So why did I tell you all of this, as if anybody really cares anyway? I told you all of this because of motivation. I became motivated to try something new. Why did I become motivated to try something new? Well, here is why. From July 31ST, 2009 until October 2011, I incurred over $650,000 in medical bills. And I did not work but 6.5 months from July 2009 until today, February 2012. It takes us all some type of motivation to get up and do something.
So why did $650,000 in medical bills motivate you? You must have had insurance. Well, of course I did. But I learned real quickly that major medical does not cover a lot of issues. I am not going to bore you with tedious details, except to say I burned through $100,420 of my own money from July 2009 until February 2012.
So again, what is the motivation? Well there is nothing like seeing a part of your life’s savings fly out the window. And get this, as part of my $100,420 spent, guess what part of this was going to fund? Well, insurance paid for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) for a grand total of 12 hours per week. I got home, could barely walk, and I get help for 12 hours a week. Well, of course, I hired a private PCA. When I had the back surgery, I came home on morphine, reduced to oxycontin, reduced to vicadin, reduced to nothing today (I am pain free).
Well, as I tapered from morphine to oxycontin, I realized I was still alive, but I noticed one day that I thought money was missing from my wallet. I went to the bank, suspecting foulness being rampant, took out $200, copied the bills, and put the bills in my wallet, and anxiously awaited the STATE LICENSED PCA return visit.
Well, right on time, the PCA shows up, I am sure to ascertain whether or not there was a fresh load in my wallet, in my night stand. So, I went into the office, appeared very busy, and let the PCA do the normal activities. You know dishes, clothes, cleaning, dusting, stealing, etc.
So, when the day was closing, I went and got my wallet, I took out the cash, laid the remaining bills on top of the copies I had made, and low and behold, guess what was missing. $159 dollars. One day’s pay, huh.
The PCA was loading the dishwasher when I was comparing bills. I promptly reported to the kitchen and said: “Excuse me, give me my house keys, be out of my house in 30 seconds, or go to jail.” The PCA, screamed at me: “I am not a thief.” I said: “Nobody said you were a thief, you did.” The PCA said: “You can search my wallet.” I said: “The money is not in your wallet, where it is, I do not want it back.” I reported the PCA to the State Licensing Board.
Motivation? Lots of motivation out there any way you decide to be motivated. So, I had a lot of downtime, and wondered how I could make internet sales, a $415 billion a year industry in 2012, somewhat mine to the tune of ½ of 1% of that amount. I wanted to recover what the PCA stole actually. The actual amount is undetermined. In the end, I have $100,420 to replace now.
With all my downtime from 2009 until 2012 I studied ways to make money on the internet without spending another $100,420. And I have done well so far. There is no secret, no scam, just look at the offer, and you decide.
But in the end, what matters is if you are motivated. When life deteriorates, you will be surprised how motivated you can become, and how quickly, you will move to action.
Am I going to make you one cent? I hope so. Am I guaranteeing you one cent. Absolutely not. I am not in the scamming business, and what I offer has a way out immediately. And does not cost a fortune.

I Was Watching The NASA Space Shuttle Challenger Live on January 28TH, 1986
I was living in Daytona Beach, Florida. It was January 28TH, 1986, the day before my birthday, January 29TH. I was in class in college at 11:30 A.M. I asked the course instructor if we could go outside and watch the Challenger takeoff live.
Daytona Beach isn’t far from Cape Canaveral. You could see every shuttle launch from Daytona Beach easily. The night launches always lit the whole sky up. I was working on getting my Commercial Pilot License at the time.
The Challenger was scheduled to depart at 11:38 A.M. It was the coldest winter I had ever spent in Daytona Beach. The temperature was a bone chilling 22° F on January 28TH, 1986 at 11:30 A.M. I say bone chilling, because I lived in Florida. I did not even own sweat pants, just shorts.
So the course instructor said, “Yes, let’s all go out and watch the launch.” So we did. We were all standing outside jumping around trying to stay warm. The time was 11:37 A.M.
The night before the Challenger launch, me and my roommate were studying and watching the news. NASA had 10 launches of a shuttle from January 1985 until January 1986. The entire year of 1984, there were only five. We were discussing how close together the launches were to each other.
I was actually flying over Sanford, Florida at 6,000 feet when Atlantis launched on November 26TH, 1985 at 7:29 P.M., E.S.T. The launch lit up the whole state. It was incredible to see from the air at night. The launch looked like the sun was coming up from the sea.
So, I and my roommate were discussing how cold it would be for the launch on January 28TH of the Challenger. I actually made the comment that if NASA keeps pushing this hard and this fast, with this many launches, there was going to be an accident. Little did I know what I foretold that night.
January 28TH, 1986, 11:38 A.M. We were looking up into the tremendous blue and cold sky that morning. The Challenger came roaring up from the ground. It was breath taking. Seventy-three seconds later, we saw the unthinkable. But we did not know exactly what we saw. We could see the solid rocket boosters separate from the shuttle and start spinning.
My class mate said, “Looks like the crew jettisoned the boosters, and are going to return to Cape Canaveral.” I said, “Let’s go to the University Center and find a T.V. and see what is going on.” So we went and found T.V. and anxiously watched. I did not go back to class the rest of the day.
Later, the determination was made that the O ring seal on the right booster rocket had failed initiating the disaster. Little did I know on that fateful day in 1986, that a little over 11 years later, on a severely cold day (8°F) in March 1997 while flying over Tennessee, my right O ring (on the right brake) would fail while landing the aircraft I was flying, resulting in a very near fatal accident.
My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and all the persons associated with the Challenger, 26 years and 20 days ago. I think about the crew and families often to this day.

The Day I Crashed My Airplane and Almost Died
It was the coldest day in Tennessee History for March, 8° F. It was the first week in March that year. I was a flight instructor and my student was going to take his multi-engine check ride. He was an excellent student. He was to fly from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Knoxville (Downtown Island airport), Tennessee to meet with the Federal Aviation Administration designated examiner for the check ride.
I had no qualms about signing him off to fly up there. After all we had done every possible type of training except land upside down. He had excelled at everything. We had done turns, climbs, descents, stalls, landing, single engine landings, and the whole shebang.
The night before his check ride, I had a nagging feeling, so I called him and told him I wanted to bum a ride with him to Knoxville and back for his check ride. I told him he could do all of the flying. He said sure.
We arrived at the airport and pulled the plane out of the hangar. We did the preflight inspection, started up, ran the engines up, and took off. It was a twin engine Piper Seneca. The air, was so cold and dense, we shot into the air like the shuttle taking off from Cape Canaveral.
As we got airborne, I took a good look around. The sky was clear, with a few clouds above 20,000 feet. The visibility was over 10 miles. I told my student, “today is a great day for this flight check, and the weather is great.” He said, “yeah, great, all but the cold.” When he said that I looked out at the outside air temperature gauge at 10,000 feet, it was minus 23° F. Yikes.
We got to Knoxville in short order, and I looked down at my watch and we were an hour early for the check ride. I said, “Let’s do a few practice takeoffs and landings since the runway is so short, and you have never been here.” He said, “Sure.”
The runway length was not what was so intimidating, it was the fact the airport sat on a little island in the Tennessee River, and both ends of the runway dumped off right into the river. As we were on final approach in to the airport, I looked over to my left and saw the University of Tennessee Volunteer Stadium, and then I looked down and saw the river. I told my student, “hit the numbers on the end of the runway, and hit the brakes hard, it is too cold to land in the drink, and I chuckled.” He said, “Not a problem”. Little did I know what was about to happen.
My student did a text book approach; airspeed perfect, altitude perfect, approach perfect, and touched down right on the threshold, right on the numbers. As we were rolling out, I said “perfect!”
We turned off the runway, taxied back to the departure end of the runway, reset the airplane, taxied on to the runway and lined up for takeoff. I said, “Brakes, full power, then release brakes.” We took off again, text book perfect. He lined up again for landing. He touched down text book perfect again.
I said “we have time for one more.” I should have kept my mouth shut. We lined up for takeoff again, and shot into the air. He flew another perfect pattern and lined up for landing. He touched down right on the numbers again.
About 3 seconds after touch down, he screamed “I don’t have any brakes!” I barked, “I have the airplane!” He let go of everything. As I peered down the runway, it did not look good. By the time he landed, tried the brakes, let me know he did not have any brakes, and I got the airplane, over 70% of the runway was gone, and we were still doing 60 MPH. My student screamed “TOGA! TOGA!” TOGA stands for takeoff and go around. I said, “Are you nuts? We will never make it. HOLD ON!”
The island was small. I looked to my right, and there was nothing but a long row of parked airplanes, just full of fuel. I did not feel like going out in a blaze of glory and I sure did not want to go down that embankment and disappear in the Tennessee River.
I looked over to the left, and saw a small field with a drainage ditch, and a row of trees. So I gunned the right engine to steer us off the runway. As soon as we hit the grass, it was so frozen, the airplane started sliding sideways. Here we were sliding sideways, looking out the pilot side left window going straight at 40 MPH toward the tree line.
Just then we got lucky, we hit the drainage ditch, and it snapped off the left landing gear, dug the wing in ground, and we were still sliding, but came to a stop 35 feet before the tree line.
I was already shutting fuel off, shutting engines down, and opening the door so when we stopped we could just jump out, in case of fire or explosion. I jumped out and turned around and saw my student was not behind me.
I stuck my head back in and said “are you going to get out, or sit there and blow up.” He said “oh.” And jumped out. He was so stunned he did not know what to do. I could hear the fire trucks off in the distance and on the way. Then I saw the Federal Aviation Administration designated examiner walking toward us.
He asked “what happened?” I said, “I wasn’t going into the subzero drink, that is what happened.” So hours later, after the investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration examiner said, “I just have one question for you.” I said “yes?” He asked, “Why did you not TOGA?”
I said “TOGA, are you kidding? I will show you on paper.” So we sat down with the aircraft manual and I figured our exact runway remaining, airspeed, and distance to takeoff when the brakes failed. It turned out we would have hit takeoff speed 50 feet into the river. I said don’t forget there is a 50 foot embankment on the other side of the river, with a 50 foot power line on top of that. So we would have had to clear a 100 foot obstacle on the other side of the river. He said, “Good enough.”
Later investigation determined the O ring seal on one of the brakes had failed, and all of the hydraulic fluid to the brakes had leaked out, and it took the first two landings to get all of the fluid out to where the brakes failed on the third landing.
The airplane was totaled; we rented a car and drove home. Later, my student did pass his check ride with flying colors, and no crashes.
Now I know why I had that nagging feeling the night before...

After reading all of that, I wished a search engine would find me and take me away, you?
So in the end what is the right answer. The right answer is you. And what you think and feel.

The first $100k gets it. It doesn’t matter; it works for me for its intended use. 500,000 apps, I phones, droids, kindles, I pods, on and on.
In the end, what happens here, each and every one of these devices gets your dime. I do not want to spend my dime; I want somebody else’s dime. Why should I pay for your $500,000 house? Pay for mine (I wished mine was worth $500,000). My house, I proudly announce, is worthy of accidentally burning to the ground on any good day, but it has not yet.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to advancement, but somewhere advancement has to pay me, not somebody else.

Don’t Park Your Rear on the Grass

The schemes and scams are ridiculous. I would say legislate the internet, but I have been legislated enough in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The City Inspector stopped by one day, knocked on the front door, and said, “Your vehicle is parked on your grass.” I peered around him, and stated, “Yes, I suppose you are right.” He said, “Well, that is a direct violation of city ordinance, to park your vehicle on your grass.”
I responded, “The hell you say, I am paying $350 a month in property taxes, and you have the audacity to state: “I CAN’T PARK MY VEHICLE ON MY OWN GRASS.” My grass must be sacred, perhaps I should smoke it.
Let’s go ahead and legislate everything. From vehicle parking, to cutting your grass, to wiping your _ss. In the end what does it matter. It matters a lot.
In the end, in an unbiased opinion, the whole lot of it is a scam. From the internet to the City I live in in Minneapolis. Do we really need somebody telling us not to park on our grass? THE GRASS WE ARE PAYING FOR AND PAYING FOR THEIR SALARIES, TO TELL US NOT TO PARK ON OUR OWN GRASS. Get a life.
